Maths Tools to Promote Engagement
Daily Warmups We saw a need in our students to develop better number sense We decided to use warmups to effect this change We currently have 5 different types of warm-ups and are working on a 6th Monday: Visual Patterns Tuesday: Fraction Talks Wednesday: Would you rather or Which one Doesn’t belong Thursday: My favorite math Mistakes (changing) Friday: Estimation 180
Visual Patterns (www.visualpatterns.org)
Visual Patterns Example
How we go over it A group goes up and answers each part on the board We go over it as a Class
Fraction Talks (fractiontalks.com) If the triangle is 1/8, how big is the shaded part? Shade 6/8 of the square
Fraction Talks Example Shade four sections that are equivalent to 1/8.
How we go over it Every group goes up and writes one of theirs on the board We go over them as a class
Would you rather (wouldyourathermath.com)
Would you rather Example
How we go over it Every group chooses one and gives a reason why to the class.
Which one doesn’t belong
Which one doesn’t belong Example
How we go over it Each group Gives an answer for each box and we repeat for all the boxes, giving a new answer, until every group has gone
Estimation 180 (estimation180.com)
Estimation 180 Example (Day 28) How many sheets on the roll of toilet paper?
How we go over it Each group Gives a High estimate, then a low estimate, then their estimate. The class sees the big reveal together
What we’ve seen after 8 weeks Good improvement in numerical reasoning Good Improvement in estimation Good improvement in pattern recognition (esp. linear) Good improvement in Mathematical communication Improvement in fractions (still struggling with this one)
