What do you have to do to be successful in school? Do homework Complete projects/assignments on time according to the directions Prepare for tests Participate in class Pay attention in class

Set up a Study Center A study center should: Be a quiet place free of distractions Have a hard surface to write on Have plenty of light Be stocked with supplies

Supplies

Plan to Study Decide what time is best for you to do your homework immediately after school take a break and then start working after parents get home at babysitter’s house after supper **Don’t forget to keep other activities in mind**

Stay Organized Use planners and organizers to keep track of homework and projects Have a designated place to put backpack/homework at home

Prioritize Assignments Check due dates on assignments Which ones need to be done first? Are some of them to be done over time? (book reports, projects, correct tests, etc.) Be sure to check assignment sheets and planners daily

Evaluate Assignments Read all directions carefully Read a 2nd/3rd time if needed Visualize what you are being asked to do Ask questions -- (parent/teacher/babysitter) Do I understand this correctly? Decide How long will it take? Do I need help? Have someone look over your work when done

Keep Track of Dates Use assignment sheets/planners to keep track of all assignments that need to be completed Highlight each subject in a different color Check off work after it’s completed

Manage Your Time Allow enough time to complete work neatly and completely. Keep other activities in mind Sports, dance, gymnastics, karate, parties, etc. These activities do not excuse you from work Do assignments while you are still alert Close to bed time is not a good choice Don’t rush through it ! ! !

Take A Break Take a break if you feel tired and can’t concentrate or are hungry Be sure to get enough rest every night. It’s hard to work when you’re tired.

Have a Homework Buddy Get a phone number for 1-2 classmates you can call if you have questions. Things to consider when choosing a homework buddy: Are they dependable? Do they live close to you? Do they do their work accurately and on time? Is it okay for you to call them?

Give your brain a workout Study Smart Use many different ways to remember what you learned. Tell someone what you learned Write it down Sing about it Draw it Visualize it Relate it to something else Give your brain a workout

Read Reread what was read in class Write down important information Read to yourself Read to a parent, friend, or an animal Write down important information Tell someone what you read Review important vocabulary words Read other books about what is being studied in class

Make Studying a Habit Get into a routine Make it a habit to practice these good study skills and you can do anything!!! Believe in yourself -- You can become the student you’ve always wanted to be
