SST Overview Aspire APEX ACADEMY

Agenda What is RTI and how do SSTs relate? What is an SST? (purpose) What steps should you take when you have a concern about a student? When should you ask for an SST? How do you do that? Kat 11/14/2018

RTI and SST context Tier 3: intense or individualized supports (IEPs, 504s, or intensive RTI support) Tier 2: Pre-referral plans, attending group interventions, classroom modifications /accommodations Kat will do this slide 11/14/2018

What steps should you do when you have a concern? Reflect: what is the primary concern? Focus on just that one piece (specific, bite-size) Start tracking data (on that primary concern) to look for progress or lack-thereof Discuss concern with parents (in person, show examples) Talk to team/leads/coach to brainstorm general ideas Refer to PRIM/BIM for ideas of interventions Meet with an Core RTI member (Ms. Calimbas, Mrs. Calvillo, Ms. Thornberry, Mrs. Ellison) to fill out a pre-referral action plan Kayla does this slide – she’ll give an example of tracking data. Example: Reading is a concern, look at DRA, noticed phonics, dig further, notice long vowels. Create a plan as part of word work, modify their homework/book box reading, notify parents, talk to team Jen – can you bring the PRIM Kayla – bring the BIM 11/14/2018

When should you ask for an SST? How do you do that? When do you do an SST? After you’ve had 1-2 pre-referral action plan cycles and the student is not showing progress OR Severe/Significant concerns (always check with Core RTI team first) How do you request an SST? Fill out an SST form and email to Core RTI Team (Ms. Calimbas, Mrs. Calvillo, Ms. Thornberry, and Mrs. Ellison) Ms. Calimbas schedules and sends notifications Kayla Key point: pre-ferral plan IS NOT the same as asking for SST 11/14/2018

What is a an SST? SST stands for Student Success Team The purpose of an SST is to create an action plan that addresses a concern about a team (involving families, teachers, and interventions/special education staff) SSTs should be AFTER other plans, strategies, and interventions have been in place and students are still not showing progress (6-12 weeks minimum) A required step before assessing students for Special Education (2-3 SSTs before assessing even is considered) Amparo 11/14/2018

Always: Family, GE Teacher, Administrator, Director of Intervention, Education Specialist, Teacher Representative Possibly: Other Teachers (specialty), Speech Pathologist, Behavior Intervention Teacher, Psychologist, Counselor, Nurse, Previous Teachers, other support people, Translator Amparo 11/14/2018

What happens at an SST GE Teachers should bring: Benchmark data / Assessment folder (DRA, writing samples) Current work samples (illustrating concerns) Pre-Referral plan (strategies/activities that you have already tried) Behavior data/homework data Be ready to share your primary concern AND ideas for a specific target goal Jen Give a copy of the SST form 11/14/2018

At the end of each meeting, we identify What happens at an SST? At the end of each meeting, we identify How we will monitor student progress? Action Steps: Who will do what by when? How/when we will follow up Parent-Conference Schedule a follow-up SST Wait and see… Jen 11/14/2018
