IBO Mission Statement The IBO aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. CAS provides the opportunity to demonstrate our commitment to the IBO and College mission statements, for ourselves and the benefit of others

Aims of CAS The CAS programme aims to develop students who: enjoy and find significance in a range of CAS experiences purposefully reflect upon their experiences identify goals, develop strategies and determine further actions for personal growth explore new possibilities, embrace new challenges and adapt to new roles actively participate in planned, sustained, and collaborative CAS projects understand they are members of local and global communities with responsibilities towards each other and the environment.

CAS Learning Outcomes Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience Worked collaboratively with others Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions Student reflections must relate to one or more of these learning outcomes #3 refers to the CAS project which all students must undertake

Creativity Ongoing Creativity – a creative pursuit you are already part of and will continue either at the College or in the wider community School-based Creativity – a new/additional creative pursuit offered through the co-curricular program or private tuition at the College Community-based Creativity – a new/additional creative pursuit offered in the community beyond St. Leonard’s: cooking, knitting, community centre programs, beautification project, performances

Activity Activity includes anything which improves physical well-being and which requires sustained physical effort Ongoing Activity – an active pursuit you are already part of and will continue either at the College or in the wider community School-based Activity – a new/additional active pursuit offered through the co-curricular program at the College Hilary Challenge, Run Club, yoga Community-based Activity – a new/additional active pursuit offered in the community beyond St. Leonard’s: dance, gym, archery, tai chi, orienteering, community centre programs

Service Ongoing Service – a service activity you are already part of and will continue either at the College or in the wider community School-based Service – a new/additional service activity offered through the co-curricular program at the College Lenny’s Van, Birthing Kits, Sacred Heart, Bangladesh Kinda Community-based Service – a new/additional service activity offered in the community beyond St. Leonard’s: St. John’s Ambulance, coaching/mentoring

Types of Service Direct Service – hands-on, face-to-face immediate impact Indirect Service – raising funds, designing and promoting events and causes Advocacy – published writing and public speaking promoting and representing the merits of service causes Research – collecting and organising data sought by service organisations

Successful Completion The 7 Learning Outcomes are met via approved reflections Complete CAS weekly for 18 months with a reasonable balance between the 3 Strands of Creativity, Activity, and Service Develop the attributes of the Learner Profile Connect a CAS experience to something you are learning in the classroom (this is called Service Learning) Completion of a CAS Project, which includes evidence of all 5 required stages (see next slide) Reflect meaningfully in Managebac CELEBRATE that you have made a difference in the world! CAS project CAS Project A CAS project is a planned, collaborative venture which realises new skills, learning experiences and development of self for the benefit of others. You must be involved in at least one CAS project over the 2 years Can address any single strand of CAS, or combine two or all three strands. Involves collaboration between a group of at least 2 other students or with members of the wider community. Must be of at least one month’s duration and include all five stages:   Investigation Preparation Action Reflection  Demonstration

Parent Approval Form St Leonard’s College is committed to the safety and well-being of students in all elements of school life. The College has zero tolerance to child abuse and is compliant with the Victorian Government Child Safe Standards. This form is to be completed when a student undertakes a CAS experience that is not a College Cocurricular activity or an activity supervised by a College staff member NB This form must be submitted for approval prior to commencement of the CAS Experience

What Now? Complete an audit of everything you already undertake which could align to CAS. Eg. Senior sport team, choir, musical, fundraising, lifesaving etc. Arrange these under the headings: Creativity – pursuits in the arts & creative thinking Activity – physical pursuits Service – giving of yourself for the betterment of others – philanthropy Start loading possible experiences for approval into Managebac Where are the gaps? Consult with your family, CAS advisor, friends, mentor and anyone else who could help with ideas for filling in those gaps.
