Aim: What does it mean to say “a fraction of a fraction”? November 19, 2009 Math 102 Objective: Students will multiply and divide fractions with unlike denominators Aim: What does it mean to say “a fraction of a fraction”? NYS Mathematics Standards: 6.N.17 Prior Knowledge: In a classroom, students were asked to form 3 groups of 4. How many students were in the classroom?

Mini-lesson: What operation do we think of when we see the words “groups of”?

To repeat, when we multiply two fractions, we multiply the numerators and we multiply the denominators.

Guided Practice: One way to show multiplication of fractions is to use a model: Example: Find Divide a figure into fourths Shade Now cut each fourth into thirds Each fourth is cut into thirds Now outline in one of the thirds Name the fraction that represents the area common to both the and the models

Let’s write the product in simplest form Example: Find the prime factors of the numerators 2. Find the prime factors of the denominators Cross out all equivalent forms of one. Multiply the remaining numerators and denominators and write the fraction in simplest form.

Independent Practice: Write the products in simplest form: 1. 2.

Homework: Problems 23, 24, 25, 29, and 30 in your Math Triumphs workbook
