What are percents?

"Percent" comes from the Latin Per Centum "Percent" comes from the Latin Per Centum. The Latin word Centum means 100, for example a Century is 100 years.

So percent means…… The number of something per (or out of) 100 So, 40% is…. 40 out of 100 or… 40/100 Now you’ve written a percent as a fraction. So percent means……

How would you write 77% as a fraction? 77/100 What about 60% ? 60/100 This would reduce to 3/5 Let’s try some more….

Converting percents to decimals

How do you write them as a decimal? There are only two steps. Drop the percent sign Then move the decimal two places to the left How do you write them as a decimal?

Let’s try some examples 115% Drop the percent sign 115. Move the decimal two places to the left 1.15 5% Drop the percent sign 5. Move the decimal two places to the left .05

Converting Decimals to Percents To turn a decimal into a percent you just reverse the steps. Move the decimal two places to the RIGHT and add the % sign.

Converting fractions to percents

How do you turn a fraction into a percent? First you have to convert it into a decimal. Just divide the top number (numerator) by the bottom number (denominator). Ex. 11/25 = 11 divided by 25 The answer is .44 Then convert the decimal to a percent. 44% How do you turn a fraction into a percent?
