Equivalent Fractions You can find any equivalent fraction by multiplying or dividing the numerator and denominator by the exact same number. x 4 5 8 = 20 32 x 4
Reduce the fraction into “simplest form” \ i.e. “lowest terms” ÷ 5 Find the biggest number that both the numerator and denominator are divisible by. 20 25 = 4 5 ÷ 5
Improper Fraction / Mixed Number 9 4 See how many times the denominator goes into the numerator (that is your whole number) and whatever is left over is your new fraction. 2 1 4 9 ÷ 4 = 2, leaves 1 as remainder Multiply the denominator by the whole number and then add the numerator. That answer becomes your new numerator and the denominator stays the same. 2 3 4 11 4 x 2+ 3 = 11 4
Adding Fractions + 7, 14, 21, 28, 35 We need a common Count by 2's + 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20 Count by 7's 7, 14, 21, 28, 35 We need a common denominator to add these fractions. The first number IN COMMON that appears on both lists becomes the common denominator Adding Fractions
