Chapter 8 Astronomy

Gravity Affected by mass and distance: greater the mass, greater the effect greater the distance, less the amount of effect

Stars and Planets Stars - ball of hot gas Planets - orbit the sun Solar System - contains 8 planets

Other Types of Matter Asteroids - large chunks of rock and metal Comets - made of rock, dust, gas, and ice

Our Solar System

Moon A solid object that revolves around a planet, reflects light to earth Our moon takes one month (30 days) for a complete rotation Moon phases Tides

Seasons Created by the tilt of the earth toward the sun - summer away from the sun - winter North and South Hemispheres have opposite seasons because they are in different positions to the sun due to the tilt

Rotation vs. Revolution Rotation - takes 24 hours, makes the sun appear to move across the sky (day and night) -rotation gives the motion of stars Revolution - takes 1 year, gives us seasons (summer, winter, spring, fall)

Latitude and Longitude
