1. Nouns Common Nouns Proper Nouns Collective Nouns Abstract Nouns Pronouns

Common Nouns Naming Word Names of ordinary, everyday things There are desks and chairs in every classroom.

Proper Nouns Names of people, places etc. Will always have a capital letter Example: My teacher, Mrs Jones, comes from England. Nelson Mandela Sutherland High School

Collective Nouns Names a collection or group Replaces ‘lots of…’ Example: A class of students. A staff of teachers. A gang of football fans. A stack of chairs.

Abstract Nouns Something which is not visible or tangible. Feelings / emotions / characteristics Example: John’s intelligence and perseverance won him the trophy.

2. Pronouns Stands in place of the noun Pronouns are used to avoid repetition. Example: Mary is given homework every day and Mary (she) does homework (it) diligently.

3. Verbs Doing word Can you …? (Work, play, study) We can test if it is a verb: a. By asking: Can you…? Can you ask? Can you reply? By placing a pronoun in front of it: We asked… He replied…

4. Adverbs Modifies (tells you more about) the verb. Tells you when, where or how something is done. They may also modify Adjectives, other Adverbs or even the tone of the whole sentence. Example: He ran fast (how) at the athletics meeting (where) yesterday (how).

5. Adjectives Words that describe Are used to describe nouns Used to say: How something feels, tastes, looks, or sounds Example: The talented teacher motivated the enthusiastic students.

6. Preposition ‘Small words’ which usually relate two words or phrases to one another. Usually precede nouns, pronouns or articles. Example: The teacher sat on the chair behind her table in the classroom and spoke to her students.

7. Conjunctions Conjunctions are connecting words Joins two Example: And adds things together in the sentence “I like baseball and soccer.” Or also joins, but makes an option “What do you like best, dogs or cats?” Or can also pose a question.

8. Interjections Interjections are small words that bear no grammatical connection with the sentences in which they are used. They express the emotions or sentiments of the speaker or convey hesitation or protest. They are usually followed by an exclamation mark. #Oh! #Oops! #Ouch! #Wow! #Yay!
