Unit 6 Text Analysis Workshop Style, Voice, and Tone

Voice Think about a time when you read an email or text from a friend. You can usually “hear” that friend talking to you through the words and phrases he or she uses. The personality that comes through in any piece of writing is the voice. The voice can belong to a writer or a narrator. Either way, voice is created through the writer’s style.

Style Style is how something is said in a piece of literature. It can be described using words like formal, conversational, or journalistic. Style is created through a variety of literary elements, including…. Word Choice Sentence Structure Imagery

Tone Another important element of style is tone—a writer’s attitude toward a subject. The tone of a piece of writing might be described using words such as humorous, sarcastic, mocking, or serious. One way to determine a writer’s tone is to look at the specific words, phrases, and details he or she chooses to include.
