Capitalism into question : Politics and Art

What is the Capitalism ? A capitalist society is based on private property, corporate ownership of capital goods and on the competition of free market. Capitalism is an economic system characterized by private, or corporate ownership of goods, by investments that are determined by private decision, and by prices, production, and the distribution of goods that are determined mainly by competition in a free market. During the Vietnam war, the U.S.A. are a Capitalist country.

Government timeline during the Vietnam War 1961 1962 1963 1964 1965 1966 1967 1968 1969 1970 1971 1972 1973 Three different presidents were in charge during the war. From 1961 to 1963, it was John Fitzgerald Kennedy, who was murdered during his mandate. Then Lyndon Johnson from 1963 to 1968 and last but not least Richard Nixon from 1968 to 1973. John Fitzgerald Kennedy Lyndon Johnson Richard Nixon

The Vietnam war was basically a political war The Vietnam war was basically a political war. It opposed the communist North Vietnam and the capitalist South Vietnam. It wasn’t just about Vietnam: it also opposed , on a larger scale, the U.S.A. and the Soviet Union. The US backed up the South while the soviet union backed up the North. This war is basically linked to the cold war.

The circumstances of the Vietnam war have conducted to the rise of several anti-war movements. They did not just manifest to stop the war but also to disown the capitalism occuring in their country. Art was used to discredit thhe capitalism and the politicians.

A few artists that fought against the Vietnam war and Capitalism : These artists fought against the Vietnam War and Capitalism in their own way : Bob Dylan and John Lennon with their songs, the most popular being The times they are-a changin’ and Imagine. Lennon and Dylan criticized their regime openly, and some of the lyrics speak for themselves :  Bob Dylan John Lennon

Masters of war, 1963 Imagine, 1971

We’ll eventually describe a Banksy creation that is the perfect example that this disown of Capitalism has last : Napalm Girl. For this one he used a picture from the war depicting a naked girl running from one of the numerous napalm bombing that occurred in Vietnam. Banksy shows her in between Mickey Mouse and Ronald McDonald, two iconic figures of a Capitalist America, of a very widely spread political regime adopted by most first world countries; both of them proudly marching along the girl, waving at people with a morbid grin on their face, as if they were leading her to another, even worse massacre. Napalm girl, published in 1972 Napalm, 1994
