Graduation Requirements Class of 2013 Graduation Requirements In today’s Advisory, we will be going over your graduation requirements. These include credits, testing & culminating project.

Credit Requirement: 22.0 Total Credits PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS DOES NOT REFLECT COLLEGE ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS English: 3.0 Fine Arts: 1.0 Mathematics (Algebra and Above): 3.0 Science: 2.0 Social Studies: World Studies I, II, III 1.5 US History 1.0 Civics 0.5 Career and Technical Education: 1.0 Health: 0.5 Fitness: 1.5 Elective: 7.0 This is a list of the credit requirements the class of 2013 needs to meet. These are HIGH SCHOOL requirements only and do not reflect college entrance requirements. Please note, for Math your class must pass Algebra I, Geometry and Algebra II. There are exceptions to the 3rd year of math; Please meet with your counselor to discuss your Math pathway if you have questions.

State Assessment and Other Requirements State Assessments Pass Reading HSPE Pass Writing HSPE Pass ONE Math End-of-Course Exam (EOC) (Algebra 1 or Geometry) Washington State History 8th grade, Out-of-State history, or take in high school You must pass the Reading HSPE, Writing HSPE and ONE Math end of course exam in either Algebra or Geometry or a state-approved alternative. Washington State History is another graduation requirement.

4-Year College: Additional Requirements For admission to a four-year college or University you will need to take: 4 years of English 2 years of Science, including 1 credit of algebra-based Biology, Chemistry or Physics 3 years of Math (through SENIOR YEAR) 2 years of the same World Language If your plan is to go to a 4-year college directly after high school, these additional requirements need to be met. Please note: Washington State colleges ask that you take math through your senior year unless you have met Pre-Calculus or higher.

Culminating Project NTPS Graduation Requirement State of Washington Diploma Requirement Why does Timberline require a Culminating Project? The answer is: it is a requirement for graduation in the North Thurston Public Schools and it is a state requirement for a diploma.

Culminating Project: The Portfolio Best Work Samples of: Reading or Writing Mathematics Creative, Artistic or a Production Personal Choice of Entry The first element of Culminating Project is your Portfolio. Your portfolio contains documents demonstrating proficiency in essential skills. While you are adding samples each year, your portfolio should also contain work from your senior year. Please note that “best work” doesn’t have to be “A-level” work, but it should be something you worked hard on and are proud of. Students will be required to submit documentation to their advisors of best works in these areas.

Culminating Project: Community Involvement Minimum of 20 hours, which can be done in a combination of: Community Service Activities Job Shadowing Working with an Adult Mentor **School service projects can only count toward 10 hours** The second element is community involvement. Timberline students are required to complete a minimum of 20 community involvement hours. Some examples of community involvement are: volunteering at a hospital, working with a service organization such as Boys and Girls Club, or career exploration through job shadowing an expert in a career of interest. You must complete this requirement by the time of your presentation, during student-led conferences

A Note About Service Hours Hours should be done ASAP or soon after Spring Break.  An “in-danger of not graduating” list is created after Spring Break for students who have not finished their requirements

Culminating Project: The Presentation During Student Led Conferences (SLC’s) Presentation includes: Portfolio of Best Works Advisory Documentation (The THS Checklist) High School and Beyond Plan (HSBP) Reflection on Community Involvement The third element is a presentation, which will be fulfilled through your student-led conference. The presentation documents your proficiency in the essential skills of speaking, academic performance and future educational and work goal setting.

Timberline Checklist You will be given the THS Checklist of Culminating Project requirements, which is shown here. You will bring this to your SLC to give to your Advisor before beginning your presentation.

“The end is near…” Keep your grades up, it matters! For Graduation To Colleges (they WILL ask for a final transcript) Grade Checks and Marching List Counselors will do grade checks in early May.  Seniors in danger of failing a class they need to graduate will be placed in back of the marching line.  Their marching partner will be placed in the back with them. We are nearing the end of your senior year…please keep these things in mind… Counselors will be doing grade checks in May. If you are failing, or near, failing a class you will be placed on the back of the Marching line AS WILL YOUR PARTNER.
