Absorption – food particles are transported to cells to be used. Elimination – molecules of food not used are passed out of your body as waste. (c) 2007 brainybetty.com ALL RIGHTS RESERVED.

(c) 2007 brainybetty.com ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. Digestion The process that breaks down food into small molecules so they can move into the blood. Mechanical digestion – when food is chewed and mixed in your mouth or churned in your stomach. Chemical Digestion – breaks down large molecules of food into different smaller molecules that can be absorbed by cells. (c) 2007 brainybetty.com ALL RIGHTS RESERVED.

The path a burrito takes… Begins in your mouth: Your tongue and teeth break up food into smaller pieces (md). Saliva turns your food breaks down food into a soft mass (cd). Esophagus Tube that connects your mouth and stomach. No digestion occurs here. (c) 2007 brainybetty.com ALL RIGHTS RESERVED.

(c) 2007 brainybetty.com ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. Stomach Muscular bag Food is broken down with your muscles (md). Food is further broken down with your digestive juices – hydrochloric acid and enzymes (cd). Small Intestine Liver produces bile to breakdown fat into smaller pieces (also removes toxins) (cd). Pancreas secretes juices to breakdown carbohydrates, proteins, and fats (cd). Pancreas produces insulin. (c) 2007 brainybetty.com ALL RIGHTS RESERVED.

(c) 2007 brainybetty.com ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. Small Intestines (cont) Food is now a soupy mixture. Mixing continues. Absorbed through the small intestine. Large Intestines Food is still thin and watery. Absorbs the water (or you become dehydrated). Remaining materials become more solid. (c) 2007 brainybetty.com ALL RIGHTS RESERVED.

(c) 2007 brainybetty.com ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. Rectum Store house for poop until you are ready to go to the bathroom. Anus Where poop passes through to leave your body. Watch the path food takes as you digest it. (c) 2007 brainybetty.com ALL RIGHTS RESERVED.

(c) 2007 brainybetty.com ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. Excretory System Works to remove wastes from your body. Kidneys, bladder, and connecting tubes Urinary System rids your blood of wastes produced by the metabolism of nutrients. Controls blood volume by removing excess water produced by body cells. (c) 2007 brainybetty.com ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. Fun Facts! HOW LONG ARE YOUR INTESTINES? At least 25 feet in an adult. Be glad you're not a full-grown horse -- their coiled-up intestines are 89 feet long! Chewing food takes from 5-30 seconds Swallowing takes about 10 seconds Food sloshing in the stomach can last 3-4 hours It takes 3 hours for food to move through the intestine Food drying up and hanging out in the large intestine can last 18 hours to 2 days! Americans eat about 700 million pounds of peanut butter. Americans eat over 2 billion pounds of chocolate a year. In your lifetime, your digestive system may handle about 50 tons!!
