Audience Representation Media texts depict different parts of their audience in their own ways: different ages, gender, ethnicities and places. The manner in which each aspect is depicted is called representation. Take a look at the women & men in Jaws – describe the representation of the characters with two adjectives. Women in Jaws Students should come to the conclusion that women are represented as either in distress or in shock. They never attempt to hunt the shark, and often remain away from the action.

Men in Jaws The leading three characters are all men, who are also the ones to hunt the shark. They carry weapons, work the boat, drink beer and later crush the can.

The crushing of the can signifies disregard to rules, as most littered cans are often crushed. In addition, the crushing could signify a need to hurt and destroy, which could represent Quint to the audience as a symbolic figure for men, which in the film are hunting a shark with the intention of killing it.

Students should be thinking of the seasons with the most free time – summer and winter (Christmas). Action-packed films (blockbusters) are released in the summer (May-July), while family and holiday films are released in December.
