Today’s Objectives: Discuss to understand specific inquiry processes Discuss to understand how those processes work in your research discipline

Inquiry Processes: A quick review These are different lenses in which you may approach your research method building. INFORMATION GATHERED FROM: College Board, 2015 AP Research Workshop Handbook and Resources, Pages 74-75 College Board, 2015 AP Research Workshop Handbook and Resources, Page 13 -Adapted from: “Choosing your Research Method in a Nutshell” (Rice & Simon, 2010)

Case Study Research Observation of a specific group to determine how and why a situation exists within that group

Causal-comparative research Identify causal relationship among variables that can’t be controlled

Content Analysis Analyze text and make inferences

Correlational Analysis Collect data and determine level of correlation between variables

Descriptive Research Study of “as is” phenomena

Ethnographic Observation of a specific cultural group to identify patterns and trends

Experimental Research Study the effect of manipulating a variable or variables

Grounded Theory Produce a theory that explains a process based on observation

Hermeneutic Research Study the meaning of subjects/texts by concentrating on the historical meaning of the experience and its developmental and cumulative effects on the individual and society

Historical Research Historical data collection and analysis of person or organization

Meta-Analysis Research Seek patterns in data collected by many existing studies and formulate principles

Narrative Research Study of single person’s experiences

Phenomenology Make sense of lived experiences of participants regarding a specified phenomena

Quasi-Experimental Manipulations of variables in populations without benefit of random assignment or control group

True Experimental Research Structured research with isolated variables and controls

Today’s Objectives: Did we... Research to understand specific inquiry processes Discuss to understand how those processes work in your research discipline

Instructions: In your Discipline Cadre... Divide up the 15 inquiry processes on the chart. Research the processes individually, completing both charts as you research. As a group: select the top five that you think would be critical for your discipline Be prepared to share with the class. 20 Minute Timer 10 Minute Timer POTENTIAL ASSIGNMENT… Charts: Student resource Side 1: Inquiry Processes and Description Side 2: Inquiry Processes and details regarding approach, design, and method (Workshop Handbook, page 75)
