“Right Leg in the Boot at Last The unification of Italy took place through the efforts of Garibaldi and the King of Sardinia. What symbol does the cartoonist use for the soon-to-be nation of Italy? How is Garibaldi portrayed? If this picture was in color, what color would his shirt be? Why? What does the title of the cartoon say about the cartoonist’s view of Italian unification? This is a British cartoon. What tone does the cartoonist use?

The Unification of Italy 1858-1870

Until 1860 present-day Italy was composed of several small states and territories. In 1860 almost all of the states in northern Italy became part of the Kingdom of Sardinia. I n 1861 the Kingdom of Sardinia was joined by all the southern states except Rome and became the Kingdom of Italy. In 1871 Rome joined the now-united Italy and became its capital.
