FORMATION THEORIES What is the Big Bang Theory? The current model of how the universe formed.

FORMATAION OF THE UNIVERSE Big Bang Large amounts of energy in the form of photons. Photons became quarks. Quarks became protons and neutrons Gases (Hydrogen, Helium, & Lithium) formed and cooled. Gravity clumped the matter together Stars and Galaxies formed

EVIDENCE FOR BIG BANG Big Bang Nucleosynthesis Cosmic Microwave Background Hubble Expansion

THE BIG CRUNCH The expansion of the universe will eventually stop. Galaxies will collide and cause a fiery death of the universe. (BIG BANG in REVERSE)

THE FORMATION OF THE SOLAR SYSTEM The Solar System began as an enormous cloud made up of mostly HYDROGEN AND HELIUM. This cloud called the NEBULA started to rotate and contract. Heat was generated at the center and formed the Sun.

THE FORMATION OF THE SOLAR SYSTEM The nebula cooled and rocky and metallic materials formed tiny particles. Repeated collisions formed asteroid-sized bodies. The asteroids combined to form MERCURY VENUS, EARTH, and MARS. The lighter materials and gases combined farther away to form JUPITER, SATURN URANUS and NEPTUNE.

Vocabulary Review The study of the history, structure and dynamics of the Universe Cosmology Particles which are packets of light. Photons A type of sub-atomic particle, thought to be the most elementary of particles. Quarks

VOCABULARY REVIEW Lighter elements, such as Hydrogen, Helium and Lithium, were formed as a result of the big bang BIG BANG NUCLEOSYNTHESIS Observable radiation (in the microwave portion of the electromagnetic spectrum) left over from the big bang, COSMIC MICROWAVE BACKGROUND

VOCABULARY REVIEW The observed phenomenon that all galaxies in the Universe (outside the local group of galaxies) appear to be moving away from us, HUBBLE EXPANSION THEORY suggests that the size of the early Universe greatly increased in a very short period of time INFLATION THEORY
