COACHing FORumS SUNSHINE COAST 2017 Presented by peter bell

Coach FORUM TOPICS Coaching Trends –Foundation & beyond… Defensive Concepts Attacking Plans General Q & A

COACHING TRENDS & Things THAT have changed……. Like everything in life we learn to do things better - consequently we have reviewed some elements including - Coaching kids & females in particular The Priority Individual Skills Attacking & Defensive Concepts

Coaching kids We used to – Over drill skill actions & behaviours Now we make everything about the understanding why in more game context activities Have very exclusive options & priorities Now we try to be very inclusive in what we do so that all kids get to develop the skills and concepts. Run complex systems & plays Now we are more concerned with executing basics under pressure & reading what is being presented and then solving that problem

Coaching females What the research says – “There is evidence to suggest coaching is still delivered in a way that is gender neutral – that is, participants being coached as though their needs are the same.” UK Women’s Sport & Fitness Foundation “some evidence (from female athletes) to suggest their male coaches are not setting more challenging goals, have lower expectations of their athletic ability, or they are not investing sufficient effort into furthering their development.” Leanne Norman “Compared to boys, studies indicate that girls enter sport 2 years later on average and drop out of sport 6 times faster.” The DADEE Program

What sways females to play sport?? A British study conducted a research on the impact, “influences” and “role models”, had on female participation. The study found 6 spheres of influence that sport providers and or coaches can use to leverage greater participation………. Togetherness – sharing her intentions increases commitment. A friend’s invitation, socializing, bonding with friends. Possibilities – opening her eyes to what she can do. Inspiring with real stories. Support – Ensuring she has behind the scenes support. Family. Progression – Giving her a sense of direction. Progressive improvement with realistic goals. Belonging – Making her feel included & valued. Must be enjoyable with experiences worth repeating. Internalise – helping her reflect on achievements. Focussing on feeling good about oneself, building self esteem.

DEFENSIVE CONCEPTS Defence is an attitude! Space vs marking up Develop concepts by layering Keep systems simple Develop ability to understand “what the opponent wants” – flexibility not rigidity KNOW THE PRIORITY CONCEPTS!

A PRIORITY DEFENSIVE CONCEPT Pre Touch Position Pre touch position is defined as the alignment all defensive players adopt at the moment the touch is effected. An example would be that as a lead middle moves out to make the touch and as that touch becomes ‘imminent’, all other defenders in anticipation, retire to more advantageous on side positions. At the Talent level it s critical that all players are taught, understand and develop this defensive concept.

Attacking CONCEPTS ‘Scoop’ vs ‘quickie’ Teach basic attack game plans and how they are designed KNOW THE PRIORITY ATTACK CONCEPTS

A PRIORITY ATTACK CONCEPT Attack Sequencing An important Attacking strategy used at Elite level is the idea of sequencing your attack. This involves the “conditioning” of defenders first in order to enhance the effectiveness of attacking options. At the Talent level it s critical to introduce all plyers to this concept even if it is only in a basic or modified way.
