6B19 Rock Formation

B19 Rock Formation Background Roughpoint Forest Ranger Ormond wanted to help the hikers identify their rock. Her plan is to figure out if the rock is kimberlite by using her knowledge of how rocks are formed. In this activity you will gather information on rock formation to help Ranger Ormond identify the hiker’s rock. Challenge Question: How are rocks formed?

B19 Rock Formation Activity Challenge Question (copy+answer in lab book) How are rocks formed? Write Sedimentary, Igneous, Metamorphic, and Fossils in your lab book. Get textbook and begin reading on page B34. Take notes on these while you are reading. Be prepared to answer questions about these topics.

B19 Vocabulary: Rock Properties Rock Type Characteristics Igneous Sedimentary Metamorphic Formed by cooling magma. Surface can be smooth OR covered with large crystals. Formed by tiny rocks like sand cemented together in layers. It can be light weight and crumbly where you feel individual particles. It may have fossils. Formed by heat and/or high pressure inside the earth. May see bands of color and tiny crystals.

B19 Lava Rock Texture

B19 Rock Formation Concept Map Get a ruler, and blank paper. Put Name, Hour, Date and title above on page. Be prepared to answer questions about how to make a Concept Map.

Igneous Minerals magma ROCKS Sedimentary volcanoes Metamorphic layers smooth or color bands, light and large crystals tiny crystals crumbly kimberlite marble fossils coal heat pressure

B19 Formation Analysis: Date_______ Name:______________________ Hr__ Copy and Explain each in 1 paragraph. How do Sedimentary rocks form? How do Igneous rocks form? How Metamorphic rocks form? Why is coal a non-renewable resource? Explain if fossils are still forming on Earth. Explain if the cost of an object reflects its true value.
