Better Buys! Objective: Learn to make comparisons and identify which one is the better buy.

Example to discuss: Alberto wants to buy flowers for his girl friend. He goes to the flower shop and they charge him $42 for 2 dozen roses. He finds it expensive so he goes to the gift shop and they charge him $50 dollars for 3 dozen roses. Find the unit price, then determine which option is the better buy. Steps: 1. Write the rate from the problem. 2. Find the unit rate. 3. Circle the option that is the better buy. $42 = ? Or $50 = __?___ 2 dozen 1 dozen 3 dozen 1 dozen roses roses roses Hint: Whichever is the cheaper of the two will be the better buy.

Your example Use unit prices to find the better buy. Soda: 6 bottles for $2.16 or 8 bottles for $2.96. Cheese: $2.80 for 12 slices or $4.36 for 24 slices.

Homework: Write each expression as a rate. Find the unit rate, then determine which is the better buy. 1. Strawberries: $1.48 for 2 baskets or $2.07 for 3 baskets. 2.
