Lesson 1.3 Order of Operations Essential Question: How do you use the order of operations to evaluate expressions?

Before we start… On a 3 day trip, the Browns drove 188 miles the first day, 168 miles the second day, and 255 miles the third day. What series of calculations would you use to find the average number of miles driven each day? Tell your partner.

What are the order of operations? A set of rules established by mathematicians to evaluate an expression involving more than one operation.

Order of Operations Parentheses/Grouping Symbols Exponents Multiplication/Division Addition/Subtraction

Order of Operations Order of Operations Parentheses/ Grouping Symbols Exponents Multiplication/ Division Addition/ Subtraction Order of Operations Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally

How do you use the order of operations to evaluate an expression? The order of operations tells us which operation to complete first when there is more than one operation in an expression. PEMDAS Evaluate expressions inside grouping symbols. Evaluate powers. Multiply and divide from left to right. Add and subtract from left to right.

Grouping Symbols Grouping symbols such as parentheses ( ) and brackets [ ] indicate that operations inside the grouping symbols should be performed first.

Evaluate 24− 3 2 +1

Evaluate 2 30− 8+13

Evaluate 90÷ 82−77 ∙9

Fraction Bars A fraction bar can act as a grouping symbol. Evaluate the numerator and denominator before you divide.

Evaluate 8+4 5−2

Evaluate 14+6 12−7

Sewing You buy a pattern and enough material to make two pillows Sewing You buy a pattern and enough material to make two pillows. The pattern costs $5. Each pillow requires $3.95 worth of fabric and a button that costs $0.75. Find the total cost.

Basketball In basketball, players score points by making free throws worth 1 point, field goals worth 2 points each, and field goals worth 3 points each. A player scores 4 free throws, 7 two-point field goals, and 2 three-point field goals. Find the total number of points the player scores.

Movies You buy 4 DVDs for $14. 99 each and 3 Blu-Ray Discs for $24 Movies You buy 4 DVDs for $14.99 each and 3 Blu-Ray Discs for $24.99 each. Find the total cost of the movies.

Art You are purchasing supplies for an art project Art You are purchasing supplies for an art project. You need 3 containers of paint, 2 brushes, and 1 case of canvas. Each container of paint is $3.99, each brush is $3.80, and each case of canvas is $15.99. Write and evaluate an expression for the total cost of the art supplies.

Area of a Garden The formula to find the area A of a rectangle is 𝐴=𝑙𝑤, where l is the length of the rectangle and w is the width of the rectangle. Find the total area of the garden.

Bowling You are bowling for a fund-raiser Bowling You are bowling for a fund-raiser. You ask friends and family to donate money at a fixed rate per game or an amount per pin knocked down. Eleven people donate $1.25 per game, 5 people donate $.10 per pin, and 3 people donate $.15 per pin. You bowl 4 games and knock down a total of 380 pins. How much money do you raise?

Scrapbooking To start your scrapbook hobby, you bought a scrapbook for $19.99, 2 scissors for $5.50 each, and 3 cropping tools for $8.25 each. Find the total cost.

How do you use the order of operations to evaluate expressions?
