Math and Stat Prerequisites HS 167 Prereqs 11/15/2018 Math and Stat Prerequisites For Quantitative Public Health Courses 11/15/2018

Why Worry about the Math Prereq? To prevent interference with ability to learn course content To enable study at an appropriate level To not waste the time of others To improve grade in the course 11/15/2018

Surgeon General’s Warnings SURGEON GENERAL’S WARNING: Inability to do arithmetic causes confusion, poor grades and the inability to learn biostatistics. 11/15/2018

ELM Pre-req Satisfaction of Entry Level Math requirement ELM test score Proficiency in SAT, ACT, or AP Quantitative reasoning course = work-around that is not always reliable Must show proof by next class of ELM requirement (no exceptions) or you will be dropped (or not added) 11/15/2018

Quantitative Skills Test Will be given in lab net week 20–25 questions On Bb platform Closed book No calculator Score < 70%  “red flagged” (high risk) 11/15/2018

How to Prepare for Quantitative Test Topics: see http://www.sjsu.edu/faculty/gerstman/hs267/MathSelfTest.pdf Preparation: see http://www.sjsu.edu/faculty/gerstman/hs267/MathSelfTest.pdf 11/15/2018

Areas to be Tested Sums (addition), differences (subtraction), products (multiplication), and ratios (division) Order of operations Fractions, decimals, percents, ratios, proportions Significant digits, scientific notation, & rounding Equations and checking of solutions Negative numbers Word problems Basic properties of logs and exponents Note: no trig or geometry 11/15/2018

Stat Prereq. HS 67 preferred Other GE stat courses OK Must be completed within 7 years Key = self-responsibility 11/15/2018

Stat Pre-req Descriptive statistics (mean, median, quartiles, standard deviation, shape via stemplots or histograms) Probability (rules, Normal distribution, t distribution) Confidence interval basics Hypothesis testing basics 11/15/2018
