Presentation transcript:

Thank you! Thursday, August 25, 2011 Please follow the proper procedure for entering the classroom. Copy the “I can” statement onto your learning targets paper for this week. Fill out your agenda. Remember your CHAMPs expectations. If your name is on the board, you still need to turn in your signed safety contract! If I don’t have it tomorrow, you will not be allowed to participate in the lab! Thank you!

Guest Speaker C: 0 H: Raise your hand and wait to be called upon A: Being an active listener and participator M: 0 P: Eyes on the speaker, heads up (not resting on the desk), listening intently, answering questions or participating as appropriate

A tale of Mr. Gamble… The Scientific Method

1. Ask a question/state the problem Example: What’s wrong with my car THIS time?

2. Gather information Example:

3. Form a HYPOTHESIS Hypothesis= an educated guess Example: maybe my battery is dead…

4. Perform and experiment to TEST THE HYPOTHESIS Example: Find a big strong woman with jumper cables

5. Make observations/record data Example: listen, feel, watch etc.

6. Draw a conclusion TO ANSWER THE QUESTION IN STEP 1 Example: my battery was dead

The steps do not always have to be done in the same order Example: Mr. Gamble wonders what’s wrong with his car, pops the hood and his engine is gone . Suddenly his question changes from “What’s wrong with my car this time ?” to “Where’s my engine?”

Overview of the steps: 1. Ask a question 2. Gather information 3. Form a hypothesis 4. Perform an experiment to test the hypothesis 5. Make observations/record data 6. Draw a conclusion (answer based on your question in step 1)

Scientific Method Practice C: 0 H: raise hand A: answer the questions M: none P: analyze the experiments to answer the questions IN COMPLETE SENTENCES

Ender Gauge your knowledge of today’s “I can” statement. On the lines underneath, please write one thing you know for sure as a result of today’s lesson. Friendly reminder: if your name is on the board, you still need to turn in your signed safety contract! If not, you will not be allowed to participate in tomorrow’s lab!
