HCS Curriculum Update January 9, 2018

HCS Elementary Programs Director of Instruction Curriculum Update Dr. Timothy Scott Director of Instruction Elementary/P8

August-October 2017 Professional Development Training Reading Foundations training involved all K-3 reading teachers throughout the district. This training will be completed on March 12, 2018 Spire Training involved approximately 100 interventionists, classroom teachers, reading specialists, and curriculum specialists. The Elementary Program Department began reviewing and researching existing reading resources that were evidence-based to increase student achievement and enhance the delivery of reading instruction. The following reading resources were examined: Benchmark (Literacy and Advanced), SIPPS, Collaborative Classroom (Being Reader, Making Meaning, Being a Writer), Super Kids Reading, and Word Wisdom.

November 15, 2017 The Elementary Programs Department conducted a “ reading resource review” for principals, reading coaches, and curriculum specialists. The eight reading resources were placed in the Gold Room at Merts for these individuals to review and provide input from 9:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m. The participants’ input assisted the department in narrowing the list of resources from 8 to 3. The top 3 resources that were identified included: Collaborative Classroom (Being a Reader, Being a Writer, and Making Meaning), Benchmark, and Super Kids Reading.

December 4-8, 2017 The top 3 reading resources were placed in schools for teachers to review.

January-March 2018 The Elementary Programs Department will be developing additional resources for the schools to ensure we have a comprehensive literacy plan. The following components will be developed along with the reading resource that is approved and purchased: Additional phonics and phonemic awareness lessons/activities for tiered instruction Additional vocabulary lessons/activities for whole- and small-group instruction Sight word lists accompanied with engagement activities and procedures Fluency procedures and grade-level passages Weekly comprehension checks with procedures Running Records with procedures Reading endurance practices and classroom procedures Weekly writing activities with procedures Weekly handwriting activities with procedures Meaningful progress monitoring schedule for all students Purposeful small-group instruction and rotation procedures  Adaptive computerized programs to further personalize student differentiation          (pilot)

March-May 2018 Professional development training will be conducted involving all K-5 teachers to ensure they fully understand how to utilize the new reading resources, as well as, the additional reading components for the 2018-2019 school year. Utilize substitutes, training videos, and existing expertise of the reading coaches and curriculum specialists.
