“Not Everyone Was Pleased” The New Deal “Not Everyone Was Pleased”

American Liberty League 1. Republicans They did not like the fact that the government was going away from laissez-faire. Roosevelt Removed the country from the Gold Standard and began deficit spending. 2. Southern Democrats They did not like the fact that Roosevelt “catered” to the minorities.

Court Packing Incident The Supreme Court struck down many of Roosevelt’s “New Deal” programs as unconstitutional. If they didn’t retire, Roosevelt threatened to reorganized the court by adding new judges up to a maximum of 15.

Huey Long Huey Long was a senator from Louisiana who offered the plan “Share-Our-Wealth.” Each family would receive a $5,000 home and $2,000 a year guaranteed income.

Father Charles Coughlin Had a radio broadcast program that reached millions. 2. Was very anti-Semitic. 3. Believed Roosevelt had sold out to the Jews.

Dr. Francis Townsend The Townsend Plan offered people over sixty (60) a pension of $200 a month.

Upton Sinclair End Poverty in California (EPIC) would establish factories owned and operated by the workers.

How Did Minorities Fair? Native Americans The Indian Reorganization Act 1. Turned over reservation lands to the tribes. 2. Gave tribes self-rule.

How Did Minorities Fair? Mexican Americans The Bracero Program 1. Established a guest-worker program as farm laborers. 2. Discriminated against by New Deal programs.

How Did Minorities Fair? African Americans 1. Blacks were put in positions of power within the government. 2. Roosevelt established the “Black Cabinet” as an advisory panel on race relations. 3. Roosevelt did not support the civil rights movement. Mary McLeod Bethune

How Did Minorities Fair? Women Eleanor Roosevelt Frances Perkins The number of married women entering the workforce increased during the New Deal. As Secretary of Labor, Frances Perkins was the first female cabinet member in U.S. history. Eleanor Roosevelt was a very visible role model.
