Causes of the war Deerfield Massacre: Feb. 1704, 300 people lived in Deerfield, Massachusetts. French, along with some Indians, attacked the village one night. 50 settlers killed, 17 houses burnt to the ground and 111 taken prisoner.

Causes of the war Forced to march to Canada, 17 died on the journey. 60 returned to Massachusetts to tell the story.

Why did the Indians side with the French? French did not want to colonize. Wanted to trade and trap beaver. Missionaries lived with the Indians and learned their customs and language.

Causes of the war 1754: French start setting up forts along the Ohio River. Governor of Virginia, Robert Dinwiddie, was the first to alert London to the danger. Advised to send a messenger to the French army in Ohio Country to inform them that the region belonged to Virginia.

Causes of the war He sent young George Washington. Reached Fort Le Boeuf by Nov. 30th and presented the message. He was kindly rejected.

Causes of the war Spring 1754: Washington returns with 160 men. First battle of the war: Fort Necessity, Washington defeated.

The Albany Plan 1754 Held in Albany, New York. Meeting between the Iroquois Confederacy and colonial representatives. PURPOSE: (1)restore friendship with the Indians. (2) build forts across vulnerable frontier.

Ben Franklin’s Plan Unite the colonies Establish a Grand Council that would: 1. levy taxes 2. raise troops 3. regulate trade with the Indians

Plan REJECTED! WHY!!! Both the colonies and the British king feared losing power.

War comes to an end Fighting stops after the fall of Quebec and Montreal. The Treaty of Paris is signed 2 years later. England receives: 1. All French territories EAST of the Mississippi River 2. Part of Spanish Florida

War comes to an end France: 1. Gives Spain all of the Louisiana Territory . 2. Keeps some Caribbean islands and two islands off the coast of Newfoundland.

Proclamation of 1763 England owns all the land between the Appalachian Mts. and Mississippi River. Problem: Many Indian tribes lived in this area and many English settlers were moving onto the land. Of course, fighting broke out between the two factions.

Proclamation of 1763 To stop the violence, a proclamation was passed and designated the land between the mountains and the river to the Indians. In other words: it closed off the frontier to colonial expansion.

If you were a colonist, would you be satisfied with this agreement? Conclusion? If you were a colonist, would you be satisfied with this agreement?
