22 January 1788 19 April 1824 (aged 36) London, England Messolonghi, Greece George Gordon Byron

Early years Born on Holles Street, London. Father - Captain John “Mad Jack” Byron Mother - Catherine Gordon -Baptized at St Marylebone Parish Church -Soon moved to Aberdeen, Scotland -Aberdeen Grammar School -Harrow -Trinity College in Cambridge

“Fugitive Pieces” and “To Mary” Lived with his mother First major work- at Burgage Manor in “Fugitive Pieces” Southwell. Was burned on the advice of his friend. (Particularly because of the poem “To Mary”) Rack'd by the flames of jealous rage, By all her torments deeply curst, Of hell-born passions far the worst, What hope my pangs can now assuage? I tore me from thy circling arms, To madness fir'd by doubts and fears, Heedless of thy suspicious tears, Nor feeling for thy feign'd alarms.

Travelling (The Grand Tour) Travelled around Europe from 1809 to 1811. Essentially a pilgrimage to Rome. Had to avoid most of Central Europe (Napoleonian Wars) At that time it was a customary for any young nobleman. Home to the Colosseum and Saint Peter’s tomb.

“Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage” -First two parts published in 1812, shortly after he returned. -Recieved with acclaim. -“I awoke one morning and found myself famous”. -Created a type of character known as the Byronic hero

“Don Juan” First two parts published in 1819 – anonymously. Often disputed with his publisher. By 1824 he had written 16 cantoses, passed away before he could finish his work. Novel in verse, often called ‘the epic of its time’. Involves itself with its own contemporary world at every level – social, political, literary and ideological.

Character Often being described as the first modern style celebrity. He himself personificated the Byronic hero. Obtained a reputation as being extravagant, melancholic, courageous, unconventional, and controversial. Became a legend during his lifetime. Has inspired writers throughout the romantic age.

Death -Died in 1824 in Greece at the age of 36. -Was fighting aganist Turks. -The news of his death was a shock to all of Europe. -His remains are placed in the garden of Saint Marylebone Parish Church. “But there is that within me which shall live. Torture and lime, and breathe when I expire”
