Dentin vs. Enamel Bonding Much of the available research reflects old information gathered on old products. At this time we will generally get higher bond values on dentin than we will on enamel. This improvement comes from the fact that we have much more hydrophilic adhesive today than we had in the past. This allows the dentin to be permeated with the resin creating a tooth/resin hybrid which creates the stronger more durable bond. Enamel is not as porous as dentin so you don’t have as high of degree of resin impregnation into the surface to facilitate the higher bond values

The Bond Strengths have been proven in our in-house studies and research over a period of 3-plus years and now are being confirmed in university studies through out the world.

Variables Which Affect Quality Of Bonding 1) Etching too long can create an etch pattern which is too deep, making it difficult for the resins to reach and lock into sound tooth structure. 2) Dentin moisture. Over drying causes poor penetration of some resins and can cause very low bond values with some bonding systems. 3) Application time. Too short of application time (scrubbing, brushing, agitation, etc.) may not allow for proper volatilization of the solvents or may not allow the self etching systems to etch the dentin/enamel properly. 4) Thinning/drying. Too thin of adhesive layer doesn’t allow for proper polymerization/curing do to oxygen inhibition. Too thick of adhesive and the solvents in the adhesive may not evaporate properly causing poor polymerization. 5) Light curing. Holding the curing light too far away or too short of curing time can result in poor polymerization. Incorrect wavelength (Some LED curing units) will not cure some restoratives properly. 6) Composite Placement. Poor adaptation of the composite to the adhesive can create voids at the bonding interface resulting in a compromised restoration. 7) Contamination during any step can compromise bond values. It is always best to etch/rinse/dry and then repeat the last step before the contamination occurred. 8) Expired Adhesives/Composites equals poor polymerization.
