Young Leader Training Module F Making Scouting Accessible

Objectives: State a range of additional needs that Young People may have. Understand how additional needs may affect their participation. Explain how to adapt programmes to meet the needs of all Young People. Explain where to go for further information and guidance. Additional needs cover a huge range of disabilities and will vary from being very mild to very severe. Sometimes it is difficult to tell if someone has additional needs, and you should never assume that someone does – ask your leadership team. Additional needs can be temporary, a broken arm or permanent like downs syndrome. It is also very important to be aware of invisible needs, like partial deafness or dyslexia LIFE CHANGING ADVENTURE

Disability and Special Educational Needs Discuss: What do you understand about the term “disability”? What different types have you come across as a young leader? Are there any young people within their section with a Disability? Lead a whole group discussion and get Young Leaders to share what they understand about the term ‘Disability’. Young people will have a varied understanding of additional needs and disabilities. It is important that this discussion is held in a positive and safe environment in which young people feel able to ask questions honestly and openly. LIFE CHANGING ADVENTURE

How accessible is the venue? In your groups, walk round the hall inside and out. Not anything that could be a barrier for any person with additional needs. Regroup the young people should share their findings, they should consider: Steps Height of door handles Sensory – lights, noise. Road crossings outside Terrain to get in Size of writing on notices Accessible toilets Kitchen facilties- are they nut free? Is there labelling? LIFE CHANGING ADVENTURE

Celebrity Quiz LIFE CHANGING ADVENTURE Discuss with the young leaders and if they know of any of the additional needs that these celebrities have. Are they any that they did not know? Which ones surprised them? Why was it a surprise? Justin Timberlake ADD and OCD Selena Gomez- Lupus Disease Daniel Radcliffe Dyspraxia Jamie Laing- Tinnitus Halle Berry- Type 2 Diabetes Keira Knightley Dyslexia Susan Boyle- Epilepsy Michael Phelps ADHD Focus on what people and celebrities have achieved, and how having a disability or additional need is not something that has adversely impacted on their success. LIFE CHANGING ADVENTURE

Programmes In your sectional groups, look a the programmes and using the scenarios can you make any reasonable adjustments Split into small teams with a programme with a range of activities. Give each team a scenario Young person with broken leg – in cast for the end of term Parent tells you child has ASD and will need extra help to understand and follow instructions Young person is Jewish and follows a kosher diet. They will also need time to pray during event Young person attends who has cerebral palsy and uses an electric wheelchair.
