ICT AND YOUR INTERNAL ASSESSMENT

On the Agenda ICT: Beyond Google search and MS word Online storage and questionnaires An introduction to EBSCOhost EBSCOhost walkthrough Your Bibliography

1. More than just ms word

Technology: Friend and enemy Easy to make changes Portable Steep learning curve for some features Technology FAILS

backup, backup, backup! Save your work in multiple locations Email files to yourself as attachments Do not be deceived by flash drives! Easily lost Breakable Prone to viruses Can become corrupt

Free Cloud storage Install software on your computer/ phone or run it through your web browser Access and edit your files safely anywhere you can get an internet connection All files automatically backup online once your Internet connection is active Google apps suite to help you work

Google Forms Live Form: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1q0HFrIx95oZg_BN_YeoO0vvoZPjwfXQd9Lzaz7pXJMs/viewform?usp=send_form

2. Welcome to EBSCOHost

In and of itself, Wikipedia is not a credible source of information for your ia

What is ebscohost?

All of these local institutions also use EBSCOhost: University of the West Indies (UWI) College of Science, Technology and Applied Arts of Trinidad and Tobago (COSTAATT) University of Trinidad & Tobago (UTT) University of the Southern Caribbean (USC)

EBSCOhost walkthrough Go to www.nalis.gov.tt

If you can’t remember your PIN, call the library at 624-4466 Logging in Library Card number Your password is a 4-digit number: the PIN that you were given with your library card. If you were not given a PIN, use your year of birth. If you can’t remember your PIN, call the library at 624-4466 This same information will be used every time you have to log in to any of NALIS’ databases or to borrow ebooks.

Welcome to ebscohost

Other databases Points of View: balanced information on a variety of topics. Especially useful for debates. Student Research Center: information tailored for your coursework needs Biography Reference Center History Reference Centre Hobbies and crafts reference center: hands-on projects and ideas

Ebscohost databases You can search within specific databases for certain subject areas, or you can search multiple databases at once. Choose your search according to your topic. Start with: Full text searching for Secondary students Caribbean Search: Full Text Searching

What’s the theme of your IA?

Using the database 1. Know what you’re looking for! Look at your topic and identify the information you’ll need. Think in terms of keywords to search, and synonyms that may work as well.

2. USE Boolean operators Boolean Operators operate like Venn diagrams. You can tell them that you want A AND B NOT C So you can state that you want information on “poverty” AND “Trinidad” NOT “Jamaica” In Caribbean search, you can also use the multiple input fields under Advanced Search.

3. Narrow your results Check the sidebar once you’ve run your search to see your choices.

Use this sidebar to reduce your results to those you can actually USE. Search limiters Use this sidebar to reduce your results to those you can actually USE.

MOST IMPORTANT LIMITERS Full text Date range: past 10 years (5 years for science/ technology) Source types: books and academic journals Subject: choose the most appropriate to suit your needs

Once you’ve found an appropriate source... Save the citation Save/ download the article Look for another!

5. Don’t forget to give credit! Once you’ve selected a journal, click on “cite” to access the article’s citation information. Find out from your subject teacher if you’ll be required to use MLA or APA when you’re doing a Bibliography. NOTE: The Bibliography should be one of the FIRST parts of your research project to be done.

Don’t forget to grab your cheat sheet!

REMINDERS Use Google Drive so that you never have to worry about flash drives. Use Google Forms and social media for peer surveys. Create an EBSCOhost account and use it for research The FIRST document you should create is your Bibliography. For each resource you choose to use, save your citation BEFORE YOU EVEN SAVE THE ARTICLE.
