Agenda What is BYOD? Why BYOD? How will BYOD work? A Day in a BYOD Classroom Guidelines for BYOD Things to Consider When can students bring devices? Connecting Devices

What is BYOD? BYOD- Bring Your Own Device A device is a privately owned wireless/portable electronic hand-held device Students may use smartphones, laptops, tablets, iPod, iPad, Nook, eReaders with wireless internet access. Smartphones must have call service turned off.

Why BYOD? Promotes collaboration, communication, creativity, and build critical thinking skills Increases engagement and student participation Personalizes student learning Digital World- It is important to teach our children how technology can be used as a productive and meaningful tool for learning, and not just for entertainment.

How will BYOD work? Students will be able to bring in devices to school and use them at appropriate times for purposeful learning activities. All devices will be using the BYOD wifi network (WAKE-BYOD) It has the same protection, filters, and restrictions as our school network. Students will be expected to adhere to all BYOD expectations and set procedures BYOD is a privilege, not a right!

A Day in a BYOD Classroom Students enter classroom and look at board to determine whether or not they will be needing their devices in class. There will be a designated spot for students to keep their device during the day. Devices may be used during whole group, small group, or independent work times Devices will be used for… Conducting research Writing Communication Solving problems Digital assessments for quick feedback on student understanding Visual presentations 21st century learning

Guidelines for BYOD- PRotection The student is solely responsible for any equipment that he/she brings to school. Combs is not responsible for your child’s device. All devices that will be used on the school internet connection and must be registered with the district. We have a “Hands Off” Policy. Devices will not be touched by anyone other than your own child. No staff or other students are allowed to handle your child’s device, except in the event that there is suspected misuse of the device, potentially violating the Acceptable Use and Electronic Devices policy.

Guidelines for BYOD- Device Safety Devices are to stay in your child’s bookbag when it is moving to and from the classroom. Devices should be brought home every day, and return to school fully charged. Please do not send chargers. Classroom will be locked whenever the full class leaves for an activity, specials, lunch, recess, etc. Please label the outside of your child’s device and case with his/her full name.

Guidelines for BYOD- Access Safety Students will only use the websites and apps that are approved by the school on their personal devices. Your teacher will provide you with a list of apps and websites that his/her class will be using throughout the school year. Students are expected to use devices for learning purposes only. No texting or social media is allowed (including with parents)! There will be no printing available to the students- all sharing will be done virtually.

Things to Consider Add your own privacy settings to your child’s personal device. Consider having a protective covering for your child’s device. Set up the “Find My iPad/ iPhone”: For Apple Devices Only

When Can Students Bring In Their Devices? October 17th All BYOD forms need to be filled out and turned in before students may bring their device to school.
