Exploring Biotechnology in Animal Science Agri-science Mr. Bailey

Introduction Since first domesticated animals have been used for everything Food, clothing, labor More and more technologies are being introduced to help animals become more productive

ACTIVITY!!!! Watch closely to the water in the jars

What are some biotechnologies used in animal science? Cloning Genetic engineering Genetic variation Selection differential

How will these biotechnologies help in the productivity of animals? Genetic variation helps the producer select the top females for breeding

What are the impacts of these biotechnologies on the environment, consumer health and animals? Environmental factors can include nutrition and disease. The potential for inbreeding can also be factored in.

How will these biotechnologies benefit humans? Food quality Food production Number of animals to humans

Epistasis Having one or more genes that cover up the effect of a dominant gene EX: B gives black, b gives brown, and ee means yellow for fur coats in Labradors. Ee and EE are normal so black or brown will show

Example of Epistasis You breed a black retriever (BBEe) with a brown retriever (bbEE). What color will the pups be?

Exit Slip Name two uses of biotechnology used in animal science. Identify one benefit biotechnology has to humans.
