TESL Ottawa Winter Event BREAKOUT EDU TESL Ottawa Winter Event Presenter: Marlaina Riggio It is a happy talent to know how to play.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson

Breakout EDU games teach critical thinking, teamwork, complex problem solving, and can be used in all content areas. It promotes the 4 Cs: critically thinking, collaboration, creativity, and communication Breakout EDU is an interactive whole-class activity that brings the element of “escape rooms” to the classroom.

Breakout EDU 45 Minute Timer Welcome to Brrinnggg! The bell to signal the end of the school day blares across the classroom. You jump out of your seat and sprint to your locker. Freedom at last! You open your locker door, and start shoving books into your backpack. An envelope falls out of your locker onto the floor. There is a green B embossed on the envelope and nothing else. As you make your way down the crowded halls of the school, you slide your finger under the envelope flap and open it. Suddenly, you have the sensation of falling and everything goes black. You wake up at the front of a rusty, iron gate with a broken down sign that says “Welcome to Camp Jurassic.” On the ground beside of you is a card that has fallen out of the green envelope. - Reflection cards to be used at the end before moving onto the next slide Breakout EDU 45 Minute Timer

DESIGNING YOUR OWN BREAKOUT In small groups of three and/or four, you will begin to design your own Breakout for your learners. Sample topic ideas: Present Perfect Idioms Active/Passive voice Modals Collocations Vocabulary words (food, animals, transportation, AWL) Physical Game Template Digital Game Template

…goes DIGITAL Featured or Created Can be assigned as homework or exit tickets Individual progress is tracked BreakoutEdu Digital Based on your experience in this workshop, what are your overall impressions of Breakout EDU? Questions, Comments, and/or Concerns
