Digital Audio Signal Processing and Applications Syllabus Sound: properties of sound waves, transduction of sound; characteristics of microphone and loudspeaker. Human auditory system: construction, loudness, sensitivity, perception, critical band, temporal and frequency masking Digitization of audio signals: bandwidth, precision, and signal-to-quantization noise ratio, over-sampling A/D conversion, noise shaping; fixed-point/floating-point representation and processing, digital filtering, common audio storage formats Basic lossless compression: Entropy, Huffman coding, Golomb-Rice Coding, Arithmetic coding Audio Coding: Lossy compression: Waveform coding: ADPCM, linear prediction Psychoacoustic coding: transform coding, QMF and MDCT, scale factor, masking and quantization, MPEG I,II,IV audio coders, MP3, Advanced Audio Coding (AAC), Digital Theater System (DTS), quality evaluation; PEAQ Audio coding format: compact disc, DVD, Blu-Ray laser and HD, digital audio broadcast (DAB) Lossless compression: Meridean Lossless Packing (MLP) coding for DVD-Audio, Direct Stream Digital for Sony/Philips Super Audio CD, MPEG-4 ALS

Digital Audio Signal Processing and Applications Syllabus Music synthesis: musical acoustic, time- and frequency-domain representation of sound, sinusoidal and harmonic signal, additive synthesis, non-linear synthesis; FM synthesis and Chebyshev techniques, physical modelling, wavetable synthesis; MIDI format, instrument and sequencing Sound acoustics for audio production: concert hall, studio and home listening room acoustics; absorption, reverberation time and Sabin calculations; room design for good acoustics. Sound effects: reverberation, depth perception, binaural perception, sound localization/spatialization, 3D sound processing/synthesis, Head related transfer functions.
