Year 1 Admissions at ESF Primary Schools

How to apply Go to ESF website at www.esf.edu.hk Follow ‘Admissions’ link Complete online form as directed, $2,000 application fee payable online using credit card (Central Application form available from 1st September) Submit required documents to ESF Centre by 7th October

Supporting Documents B. Central Applicants (Year 1 and Year 7) for academic year 2017/18. Application period: 1-30 September 2016 If you are applying under Central Applications, the items below must be sent by ‘registered mail’ to the English Schools Foundation, Central Admissions (Year 1 or Year 7), 25/F, 1063 King's Road, Quarry Bay, Hong Kong for a completed application. Supporting documents must be received by the English School Foundation no later than the dates noted below for Central Application processing. An acknowledgement email will be sent to all applicants in October 2015. For late applications to Year 1 submitted after 31 October 2016, please send your supporting documents directly to the school of zone. Year 1 (born in 2012) –Deadline 7 October 2016 The supporting documents are the same as General Applications listed above in A.

Supporting Documents Year 1 (born in 2012) – Deadline 7 October 2016 □ Copy of completed ‘Online Application’ form or the Application slip/acknowledgement email; □ Copy of application fee online payment result; □ Copy of student’s birth certificate; □ Copy of child’s passport including the current visa status for Hong Kong □ Copy of parent’s passport including the current visa status for Hong Kong; □ Copy of parent’s and child’s identity cards, if applicable as residing in Hong Kong; □ Two proof of HK address documents – a stamped copy of tenancy or purchase agreement plus a utility or bank statement; □ Two recent photographs of the student. □ Details of parent attendance at ESF primary/secondary school (if applicable).

Time frame Submit applications any time between 1st and 30th September, 2016 No advantage in early submission

What happens next? Processing of all applications received during Year 1 central application period (August 2017 entry) Random numbering Prioritisation, ordering and listing

Priority for interview 1. Corporate Nomination Rights Nominees 2. Children of full-time staff at ESF or ESF Educational Services Ltd 3.  Siblings of students already attending an ESF primary or secondary school or Jockey Club Sarah Roe School 4.  Individual Nomination Rights Nominees 5.  Children of former students who have attended an ESF school for a minimum of 3 years or are former ESF students returning from a period overseas 6. Children attending an ESF International Kindergarten* [Note: contingent upon the child studying in the kindergarten continuously until the end of term 3 prior to entry into primary school] 7. Other applicants who can benefit from an English-medium education * Priority for interview is subject to having attended kindergarten for a minimum of two terms prior to the applicable January Year 1 interview period. Students recently arrived from overseas are exempt from the two terms requirement. Student graduating from K2 in the first year of operation of the new Tung Chung kindergarten are also exempt.

Interview ahead Groups for interview usually comprise of children from the same class and session ESF International Kindergarten children are usually encouraged to wear their uniform (for familiarity and conversation starters) At interview…..

What skills are important? a) Engage in English Communicate verbally and non-verbally in routine social and classroom situations Use acceptable social language (e.g. please, thank you, excuse me) Use clear pronunciation

What skills are important? b) Be prepared to participate in answering questions and give some basic personal information on request Extend answers to questions beyond single word responses – phrases and simple sentences Follow simple instructions and ask questions to clarify

Following interview Parents informed of result (letters sent in week of 16th February) Assuming success… $10k Deposit payable to secure place $38k Payment of Non-Refundable Capital Levy (both due by 24th February 2017) Dual applicants…Please note No transfer ESF Primary <~> ESF PIS No transfer ESF PIS <~> ESF PIS

What if my child does not get an interview date? As the interview process unfolds, further interview slots become available and schools will send out more invitations The process continues until all available slots have been filled Keep options open by applying to other schools

What if my child is unsuccessful? Open dialogue between school and kindergarten staff There are instances where students may be asked to attend a second interview The final decision is made by the school

How can I help my child? Play dates Fun clubs Share a book Visits out Watch DVDs together Take any opportunity to encourage conversation Enhance mother tongue Praise and encourage to build self-esteem and confidence
