INVASION OF SICILY Giacomo and Giorgio

Essential question Why is the invasion of Sicily relevant to the defeat of Germany? Vocab Operation Husky General Montgomery Lieutenant General George S. Patton Operation Mincemeat Charles Cholmondeley Ewen Montagu

Breakdown Question What is the invasion of Sicily? Why is the invasion of Sicily relevant to the defeat of Germany? What happened after the invasion? Why is the invasion relevant?

What happened Allies wanted to invade sicily to Remove fascist regime Secure the mediterranean Divert German divisions from the northwest coast of France July 10 1943- Italian Allies’ campaign began the invasion Operation Husky 150’000 troops, 3’000 ships, 4’000 aircrafts Landings were progressed with Lieutenant General George S. Patton commanding American ground forces and General Bernard L. Montgomery leading British ground forces. Achievement 17th August allied occupied Sicily Very successful

Why was the invasion of Sicily so successful Allied Strategy- Weather advantage Allied militarily superior- weak German army because of the North African Campaign Allied Strategy, Hitler- Operation Mincemeat Day before there has been a storm and the germans thought it was very unlike that there could be an invasion Operation husky was almost canceled because of the storm but did it anyways

Operation Mincemeat It is a deception strategy used from the British convince Hitler, that the Allied would have invaded Greece and Sardinia. They putted a decomposing corp on the Huelva coast, from the analysis they found out that it was the major William Martin from the royal Britain marine. “A body is obtained from one of the London hospitals ... The lungs are filled with water and documents are disposed in an inside pocket. The body is then dropped by a Coastal Command aircraft ... On being found, the supposition in the enemy's mind may well be that one of our aircraft has either been shot or forced down and that this is one of their passengers” Charles Cholmondeley In the body they putted a small paper saying that the Allied would have invaded Sardinia and Greece The Führer does not agree with ... [Mussolini] that the most likely invasion point is Sicily. Furthermore, he believes that the discovered Anglo-Saxon order confirms the assumption that the planned attacks will be directly mainly against Sardinia and the Peloponnesus. Words from Karl Donitz after a discussion with Hitler Britain faked to be interested in the body Charles Cholmondeley

Significance of the invasion Mussolini was arrested Italian government secretly surrendering to the Allies New government in Italy Answering to the essential question Germany lost the only alliance in Europe Sicily was a strategic point that was able to control the mediterranean and north africa A new provisional government was set up under Marshal Pietro Badoglio
