Task Instructions (You will need chalk) Clear desks of all items. In pairs or small groups draw a long chalk line down the middle of the table and write fast-twitch at one end and slow-twitch at the other end. For each picture: Identify the skill. Agree on the percentage of fast twitch and slow- twitch muscle fibres that are used in that skill. Write the skill on the continuum. Once finished circulate the room and look at all the other continuums. Reflect on and refine your continuum. Variations/Extensions Clear the room and indicate that one end of the room is fast twitch muscle fibres and the other end is slow twitch muscle fibres. Students stand where they think the skill lies on the continuum. Students can make their own individual continuum’s on a piece of paper. The Learning This task encourages discussion, compromise and agreement. A deeper understanding of the role muscle fibres play in sporting skills.
