Effects of Different Anti-Bacterial Soaps on Killing Bathroom Bacteria by Jess Lee, Raquel Miller, and Anna Dowling

Introduction What effects will different anti-bacterial soaps have on bathroom bacteria? Hypothesis: Considering the bacteria came from a bathroom sink handle, the Johnson Parker® Deep Cleaning Hand Soap, made for use in the bathroom, will kill the most bacteria.  The objective: to explore the effectiveness of the different sanitizing products people use on a daily basis.

Methods Materials Used: Nutrient Agar in petri dish 4 1/4 inch paper circles 4 plastic cups Sterilized (Bunsen burner) tweezers 3.5 cm clear plastic tape Products Used:  Johnson Parker® Deep Cleaning Hand Soap Alco Instand Hand Sanitizer  Tap water Dawn® Plus Power Scrubbers Soap

Results

Conclusion Why did we get these results? Foam anti-bacterial hand sanitizer was alcohol based so it may have evaporated instead of actually fighting the bacteria.  Dish soap was thicker and more concentrated, so it likely remained on the disk longer, prolonging the antibacterial effects. Hand soap was thinner and may have lost effectiveness after a while. Suggestions for future research on this topic.  Testing the effectiveness of the removal of bacteria instead of the prevention of bacterial growth after product use.
