Using the handout, you will take notes Using the handout, you will take notes. HW tonight is to review your notes and write one question or study prompt in the left hand column for each main idea. Write your summary.

Essential Question: How can we stay safe in a laboratory environment? Instruct students to copy this into their Cornell Notes Header.

Read Labels Labels tell you what is in the can or bottle. Pictograms communicate specific information about the hazards of a chemical. Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS) http://www.unece.org/trans/danger/publi/ghs/ghs_welcome_e.html

Safety Features and Equipment Know the location of our safety equipment. Take a moment now to look around our room. In your notes, write down where you see the safety features.

Act Responsibly in the Lab Give 100% attention and effort to lab work. Tell your teacher if you think there is something wrong with the equipment.

Chemical Labs Notify the teacher of any spills or breakages. Report all accidents or injuries however small. Fire burns. Keep all flammable stuff away from flames or heat.

Fume Hood WHAT is it? A local ventilation system. WHY use it? To protect yourself from toxic fumes and dust. How do we use it?
