What might this drawing suggest about the Lord of the Flies’ intention when speaking to Simon?

The Lord of the Flies Thursday, November-15-18 To examine the religious context of the novel To apply the context to the language used in Chapter 8

Listen to the song by The Rolling Stones Sympathy for the Devil Listen to the song by The Rolling Stones Please allow me to introduce myself I'm a man of wealth and taste I've been around for a long, long year Stole many a man's soul to waste And I was 'round when Jesus Christ Had his moment of doubt and pain Made damn sure that Pilate Washed his hands and sealed his fate I watched with glee While your kings and queens Fought for ten decades For the gods they made Pleased to meet you Hope you guess my name But what's puzzling you Is the nature of my game Just as every cop is a criminal And all the sinners saints As heads is tails Just call me Lucifer 'Cause I'm in need of some restraint So if you meet me Have some courtesy Have some sympathy, and some taste Use all your well-learned politesse Or I'll lay your soul to waste https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vBecM3CQVD8 http://www.metrolyrics.com/sympathy-for-the-devil-lyrics-rolling-stones.html What do these lyrics reveal about the image and character of the Devil?

Based on these images, how would you describe the Devil? Also known as… Satan Lucifer Mephistopheles Beelzebub The Evil One The Prince of Darkness https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PyM2xRAbVvE http://www.metrolyrics.com/sympathy-for-the-devil-lyrics-rolling-stones.html Based on these images, how would you describe the Devil?

Beelzebub Ba’al-zebub, also called Beelzebub or Beelzebul, is known as the ‘prince of demons’. In Hebrew, Beelzebub is known as Ba’al Zvoov, literally meaning “husband/lord of the flies.” He is called primary in power & crime after Satan, and most demonographers call him supreme chief of hell. Belzebub was the god of the Canaanites, who represented him with the figure of a fly or with attributes of a sovereign power. He was known to give oracles (predict the future). In the Synoptic Gospels (Matthew, Mark and Luke), the Pharisees accused Jesus of being Beelzebub because he could cast out demons. In the Testament of Solomon, Solomon learns that Beelzeboul is one of the fallen angels who destroys through tyrants, causes demons to be worshiped, brings about jealousies and murders, and instigates wars. For each bolded word/phrase, find an example from the novel that proves Beelzebub was the Beast

The Lord of the Flies Read over the extract of Simon’s encounter with the Lord of the Flies, and annotate the following: Imagery (similes, metaphors, personification) Rhetorical Questions Imperative Sentences & Commands Repetition Insults made by the Lord of the Flies Why would the Lord of the Flies insult Simon, give him commands, and ask him rhetorical questions? What kind of imagery is used to describe the scene? What tone does it set? What parts of the exchange between Simon and the Lord of the Flies relate to Beelzebub’s characteristics?

Nature of the Beast Throughout the encounter, the Lord of the Flies makes statements that relate to past events on the Island. For each past quote, find a quote from the extract that is similar to it. Chapters 1 – 7 Chapter 8 "All the same. You'll get back all right. I think so, anyway." Some of the strain had gone from Ralph's body. He glanced at the sea and then smiled bitterly at Simon. "Got a ship in your pocket?" Simon grinned and shook his head. When Simon was still silent Ralph said curtly, "You're batty." "What I mean is . . . maybe it's only us." "No, not it . . . I mean . . . what makes things break up like they do?" “We hunt and feast and have fun. If you want to join my tribe come and see us. Perhaps I'll let you join. Perhaps not." What could this choice by Golding reveal about the nature of the Beast? What was Golding’s message to the readers?

Research the Devil As a group, research your given representation of the Devil, and create a poster answering the following questions: What is the meaning of his name? Which texts/stories does he appear in? What is his personality? What is his background? What is he known for? What does he look like? Group 1: Satan Group 2: Shaytan Group 3: Mephisto/Mephistopheles Group 4: The Devil Group 5: Lucifer Group 6: Samael
