Out- Why are Sponges and Cnidarians important to medical research IN- What does it mean to be more complex and give an example of two things where one is more complex than another. 10/2 Out- Why are Sponges and Cnidarians important to medical research

IN- How do you write an organisms Scientific name? 10/3 OUT- Describe 2 body forms of Cnidarians and tell how each reproduce.

IN- Why are sponges considered the LEAST complex animal? 10/4 IN- Why are sponges considered the LEAST complex animal? OUT- What was the main idea of injecting the dye towards the sponge?

IN- How would your world change if you couldn’t move? 10/5 OUT- What are some possible benefits of having a MEDUSA and a POLYP form?

IN-Name at least two threats to coral reefs. 10/9 OUT- Why are coral reefs called “RAINFORESTS OF THE SEA”?

Sponges, Cnidarians, and Coral

Sponges Phylum Porifera Importance of Origin of Characteristics of sponges Body Structure Obtaining Food and Oxygen Reproduction Summary

Summary Most sponges live in s ____ w____ and are a_________ symmetrical. Adult sponges are s___________, which means they do not move. Sponges pull water into their bodies, where cells filter out f_________ and o____________.

Cnidarians Two body forms examples Body structure Obtaining Food Reproduction Origin of Cnidarians Medusa Polyp Body form (shape) Mobility Usually sessile Examples Jellyfish for most of their lives Summary-

Summary Cnidarians live mostly in salt water, have r______ symmetry and have 2 body forms p_____ & m______. Most have tentacles with s_______ cells to obtain food. Cnidarians have nerve cells, tissues and a digestive cavity.

IN- Summarize the 6 animal characteristics from page 330. 10/10 OUT- Why are sponges considered less complex than Cnidarians?

IN- Coral reefs are most commonly found at s______ depths in t________ waters. 10/11 OUT- Cnidarians are more complex than sponges because they have _______, a digestive cavity, and a nerve net connecting all body parts; sponges do not have ________, organs, or organ systems.

Coral Summary Coral Reefs Formation of coral reefs Importance of coral reefs Made of ________ Grow as ________ Can take _____ of years to form Provide habitat for _____ Protect ___________ Provide __________ Summary

IN- Summarize the 6 animal characteristics from page 330. 10/10 OUT- Why are sponges considered less complex than Cnidarians?

Summary-Coral Coral reefs are most commonly found at shallow depths in tropical waters, particularly in the Pacific Ocean, but deep water and cold water corals also exist on smaller scales. Coral reefs deliver ecosystem services to tourism, fisheries and shoreline protection. The annual global economic value of coral reefs has been estimated at $30 billion.

Vocabulary Definition Here Sessile- Hermaphrodite- Polyp- Medusa- Tentacle- Stinging Cell- Summary: Cnidarians are more complex than sponges because they have tissues, a digestive cavity, and a nerve net connecting all body parts; sponges do not have tissues, organs, or organ systems.
