The Evaluation Process The goal of an evaluation process should ALWAYS be to use approaches that strengthen a teacher’s capacity for greater reflection and self-reliance in making improvements in classroom teaching and learning. ~ Glickman, 2002

How we say it makes a difference Sometimes we hear it incorrectly. Randy Pausch on Disneyworld (Pausch, 2008) What’s the difference? Example: “None of you are planning the way Charlotte Danielson says teachers should be.” Think, Pair, Share: “You had students in groups that didn’t get along well at all.”

Listen “Seek first to understand, then to be understood.”----(Covey, 1990) There is an appropriate time and place for every meeting or conference Be authentic (Bird, et al., 2009) Allow teachers voices to be heard (Glover, 2007) Balcony People

Practice makes perfect Single task Paraphrase what you think you heard them say Non-verbal cues Think about what they are saying---not what you will say when they are finished Remember how important this is to the teacher

Role Model effective teaching If there are 36,000 seconds in a typical student lesson, how can we maximize engagement? Do we do that in faculty meetings? Point out when you are demonstrating good management of routines or when you lose their engagement. Guide on the side versus sage on the stage Build on natural curiosity

Communication in evaluations Transparency is key---everyone should know everything. Evidence only---not interpretation. Formative feedback should be “free”---mentoring, coaching. If you never compare your thinking with other people, you will never grow in your abilities as an observer. Frame Suggestions as Questions---the seduction is to tell them what to do

Build relationships with each other. *Take time to ask how others are doing. *Be genuine. *Take time to laugh and play with colleagues. *Building relationships builds relationships (LinkedIn analogy). *Whom do you trust? Why? Share helpful hints with teachers---books they can read for help in each area

“How You Live” by Point of GRACE Turn up the music, turn it up loud. Take a few chances, let it all out. You won’t regret it, looking back from where you have been. ‘Cuz it’s not who you knew, it’s not what you did, IT’S HOW YOU LIVE.
