POPCORN LUNG FELIX K. KARTHIK

WHAT IS POPCORN LUNG? Eight former employees of a microwave-popcorn plant were reported to have severe breathing problems by inhaling chemicals in the plant Later the chemical was found to be DIACETYL. Diacetyl causes Bronchiolitis obliterans in the lungs known as “popcorn lung”.

DIACETYL Diacetyl was flavoring agent to produce buttery taste When ingested its safe The problem is when we inhale (like when you microwave the popcorn) it causes respiratory problems

POPCORN LUNG Bronchiolitis Obliterans or “popcorn lungs” is from scarring of the tiny air sacs in the lungs resulting in the thickening and narrowing of the airways Serious lung disease that causes coughing, wheezing and shortness of breath, similar to the symptoms of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

POPCORN LUNG

Popcorn lung in smoking cessation class??? Major popcorn manufacturers removed DIACETEYL from their products. But…..

E-CIGARETTES DIACETYL is added to “e-juice” liquids by e-cigarette companies Complement flavorings such as vanilla, maple, coconut and more Harvard researchers found 39 out of 51 E-cigarette brands contain DIACETYL

E-CIGARETTES The study also found two similarly harmful chemicals—2,3 pentanedione and acetoin Roughly 92 percent of the e- cigarettes had one of the three chemicals present
