Objectives You will be able to: Define habits. Identify your productive and non-productive habits. Understand the importance of prioritizing. Differentiate between a short term goal and long term goal. Apply the principles of goal setting to create your own short and long term goals.

What are Habits? Types of habits… Good habits Bad habits Can you think of examples of each type of habit?

Activity: Changing Habits Cross your arms Now, cross them the opposite way How does it feel? We can change our habits with practice

Habit: Put First Things First Prioritize: To put things in order of importance Why is prioritizing important?

Habit 1: Put First Things First Activity: Time Quadrants URGENT NOT URGENT Cramming for tomorrow’s test Running late to class ________________________ Making friends Essay due next week Text Messages/Phone calls Other people’s small problems _________________________ Too much TV or Internet Excessive relaxing IMPORTANT NOT IMPORTANT

Which quadrant are you in?? Activity: Time Quadrants URGENT NOT URGENT THE PROCRASTINATOR Stuck in urgency…Putting things off…Planning ahead is out of the question! Result: STRESS, ANXIETY, BURNOUT, MEDIOCRE PERFORMANCE THE PRIORITZER Represents things that are important not URGENT! Powerful habit of planning! Does work in advance. Results: On top of things, less stress/burn out more time for other things! THE YES-PERSON Urgent not important, This can be deceptive, things seem important but are not! Things are important to someone else but not to you! Want to say no but can’t. Result: Lack of discipline, reputation of being a pleaser, others can walk all over you! THE SLACKER Not urgent nor important! Professional loafer. Category of Waste and excess! School is not on the mind of a slacker. Result: Lack of responsibility, feeling guilty. IMPORTANT NOT IMPORTANT

Balancing Out Your Quadrants What can you do to become more of a Prioritizer? Use your agenda Do fun activities after important things Plan for the week Say No to unimportant things
