Introduction

Reading the Essay Question What do you need to do? Determine the THEME of my novel: message to you from the author via his story and characters’ experiences How do I do that? Look at the main character- what struggles has the author put them through to learn or understand something? How can what they learn be applied to everyone? Themes often relate to LIFE in general. 3. Ask: “What message is the author sending me?”

DON’T FORGET: you must CITE IT. Once you have THEME… Choose (3) items from “A” on your sheet. How does the author INTENTIONALLY use these three writing tools to CREATE THEME? How do I prove it? You need to find one place in the novel for each item where the author is using that tool. You may quote it OR paraphrase it– DON’T FORGET: you must CITE IT.

Once you have THEME and (3) tools the author uses to create it Write your introduction – follow directions on the essay question sheet *** Remember: the THESIS sentence is provided for you and MUST be the last sentence of your introduction. ***

Body Paragraph 1

Following the order listed in your THESIS sentence, write the first body paragraph. Have a transition sentence: Ex.: One way J.R.R. Tolkien creates the theme of unity is by using the literary tool of dialogue. Make your claim / argument: Ex.: Tolkien’s use of a variety of languages, which may seem to isolate groups of people at the beginning of the trilogy, actually acts to bring people together; this develops the theme of unity. Find a supporting quote, copy it or paraphrase it… cite it. Ex.: As the character Gandalf states, “ “ ( Tolkien 78). 4. Analyze how the quote connects to the theme 5. Write an ending sentence to the body paragraph which sums up the importance of that tool in the novel as it is used to create theme.

Analyze how the quote connects to the theme 5. Write an ending sentence to the body paragraph which sums up the importance of that tool in the novel as it is used to create theme.

Writing the Conclusion: Restate your thesis in a reworded, fresh way Sum up the three literary tools and why they were effective in creating theme for the reader **avoid the use of “I”- stick with “the reader” End your essay with a few sentences which explain why understanding the theme and how it was created is important to an overall deeper understanding of the novel for the reader.
