The Great Barrier Reef By Tiana D’angelo

The Great Barrier Reef The Great Barrier Reef is the most popular reef in Australia. It’s so fascinating and all of the sea life that live there are amazing too. The Great Barrier Reef has so many interesting and detailed things. It’s so colourful and natural. The plants play a big part in the reef’s structure like sea grass and other plants. The Great Barrier Reef is definitly a great place in Australia.

Plants - Seagrass In the Great Barrier Reef there is seagrass. Some seagrasses most often grow in shallow, sheltered marine waters,. They are the only type of seagrass that can flow properly to successfully keep the sea clean. Seagrasses are different to seaweeds and algae because they have true roots and are flowering plants. Seagrass are the only flowering plants in the sea. Animals in the Great Barrier Reef need seagrass to feed off like turtles, dugongs and Blue Tang SurgeonFish.

Blue Tang SurgeonFish/Animal The Blue Tang Surgeonfish has some predators like the snapper, the grouper, jacks and barracudas. Even though the Surgeonfish is quick through the water these larger fish still target the surgeonfish because of its size and also because they are easier to catch than other fish. The Blue Tang has a royal blue body, yellow tail, and black “palette” design. It’s an oval-shaped fish with a hard beak-like mouth that scrapes algae from rocks. Its tail has sharp spines on each side, and when disturbed, these spines unfold from a groove.

Climate and weather With lots of sunshine, warm seas, refreshing sea breezes and a warm climate all year round, Tropical North Queensland weather is hard to beat. The Climate in the Great Barrier Reef is divided into 2 seasons instead of the typical 4. Winter begins in May and ends in October offering sunshine, fresh breezes and low humidity. Summer, or the 'Wet' season from November to April and refreshes with tropical downpours of an afternoon and dramatic electrical storms.

Natural disasters The coral in the Great Barrier Reef are not the only species of life that are affected by natural disasters, it’s the aquatic animals too. At certain times of the year, the corals are exposed to full sunlight and are stripped causing them to become stressed, bleached and possibly die. Animal Life ThreatA threat to animal life is that after a windy day or a flood, plastic bags and other plastic things can go into the great barrier reef and sea life can get ravelled into it or eat the objects.

Effects of natural disasters on the environment 1. The effect is that the coral can possibly die and get too much sunlight for its body and the coral can get stressed. Animal Life Threat2.The effect is that sea life can get injured or even die. Their habitats will become unhealthy and dangerous for the aquatic life.

Terrain The Terrain of the Great Barrier Reef is all water. The ocean floor of the reef is rough and some parts of the reef is covered in seagrass. The floor is also covered in coral and plants.
