Presentation transcript:

The War for Europe and North Africa Soon after the attack on Pearl Harbor the United States and Great Britain joined forces to defeat Nazi Germany. Hitler responded by sending submarines to sink American ships that were trying to make their way to Europe

In Europe the Nazi’s and the Soviets fought a fierce battle for the city of Stalingrad. The Soviets won and began pushing the Nazi’s back towards Germany.

In 1942 thousands of American troops landed in North Africa. A groups of African-American pilots called the Tuskegee Airmen helped with the allied invasions of North Africa and the Italian Island of Sicily.

The General in charge of the U. S The General in charge of the U.S. War effort in Europe was General Dwight D. Eisenhower. He was often known as “Ike” He was in charge of the D-Day invasion in which American and British troops landed on the beach in North France to begin pushing the Nazi’s towards Germany.

The D-Day invasion was very bloody but was successful. By October 1944 the American, British and French were in Western Germany. As the allies pushed the Nazi’s back they freed the Nazi death camps. After being President for 13 years FDR died from a stroke just 30 days before the Nazi’s surrendered.
