“I know only one thing about the technologies that await us in the future: We will find ways to tell stories with them.” -Jason Ohlar Author: Digital Storytelling in the Classroom: New Media Pathways to Literacy, Learning, and Creativity

Digital Storytelling What is it? What should you know about it? What are the effects on student learning? How? Where can we use it? Examples of Digital Stories Sources (suppliers)

What is it? Digital Story: A short, first person video-narrative created by combining recorded voice, still and moving images, and music or other sounds. Center for Digital Storytelling www.storycenter.org

What should you know about it? Most students generate electronic content to share so digital stories work well to interest students because they are probably creating them for “fun” anyway.www.educause.edu.eli There are many multimedia technologies that are used in the process. www.educause.edu.eli These stories can take weeks to work on depending on how you schedule the time. Porter, Bernajean

What are the effects on student learning? Educational benefits: engagement with real world issues, careful analysis, investment in their own performance, conflict resolution, community connections. Student’s grades go up. Students are less likely to be absent when working together on long term projects. Using this process students dig deeper into the subjects. Keeps students engaged! Microsoft

How? Pre-production Phase - Writing the Script - Planning the Project - Organizing Folders Production Phase - Recording the Voiceover - Gather, create, edit media resources - Organize for copyright use of media Post-production: Putting it all Together - Create rough cut first and final cut last - Show the work Porter, Bernajean

Where can we use it? English – students can write and create their own fictional story. Science – students can use digital storytelling to present a science project. Social Studies – students can research and present a “piece” of history. Math – students can “teach” other students how to complete a mathematical process.
