What were the effects of the collapse of the Soviet Union? Notes #46

Yeltsin with U.S. President Bill Clinton In the 1990s, under Boris Yeltsin’s leadership, Russia attempted to become a democracy with a free-market economy. Yeltsin with U.S. President Bill Clinton

This switch to a free-market economy caused major economic problems in Eastern Europe and Russia.

The collapse of the Soviet Union also led to ethnic violence breaking out in some Eastern European regions during the 1990s.

For example: Chechnya fought with Russia over its right to gain independence, which Russia refused to give; . . .

. . . and ethnic violence occurred in the former Yugoslavia, between Serbs and non-Serbs, . . .

Serbia’s first president, Slobodan Milosevic (1991–1997) . . . which resulted in Serb-led genocides directed toward Muslims in Bosnia and Kosovo, both of which the rest of the world failed to stop. Serbia’s first president, Slobodan Milosevic (1991–1997)
