High Renaissance By: Salvador Sanchez

What was the High Renaissance period? The period of the High Renaissance was a time when Rome took the place of Florence and it’s artistic prominence. During this period a series of powerful popes created a papal state in Italy with Rome as its capital. Rome became the artistic capital of Europe. Artist were challenged with difficult tasks Many new artist arose at this time.

The Virgin of the Rocks The virgin of the rocks created by Leonardo Da Vinci The figures are placed together as a pyramid like shape and all seem to be sharing and admiring the same atmosphere which is a method of unification used at the time. Was created using oil painting on wood in 1485 and later transferred into canvas. Utilizes contrast and certain colors in order to emphasize certain things within. Ultimate goal was to discover the laws of human nature. Primarily focused on the study of the human body.

Marriage of the Virgin Marriage or the virgin created by Raphael Oil painting on wood Created in 1504 which was painted on the chapel of St. Joseph Utilizes perspective within the painting by including a temple in the background. Tends to use light colors in order to represent the characters in the painting and the overall uplifting mood.

The Creation of Adam The creation of Adam - made by Michelangelo Fresco painting in the Sistine Chapel ceiling created in 1508. A type of mural painting executed using freshly laid or wet plaster. Utilizes various forms of color and religious beliefs. Representing god giving life to Adam, the first man.

Baldassare Castiglione Created by Raphael in 1514. Created by using oil paintings on wood and later transferred to canvas. Used a neutral background without any type of landscape. The tones are dull and simple in order to compliment the mood and tone at the time.

Madonna of the Harpies Created by Andrea Del Sarto in 1517. Made from oil painting on wood Presents the Madonna standing majestically on an alterlike base essentially glorifying her. Imposing a massive pyramid figure commonly used during this time as a form of symmetry. Uses dusk colors and contrast to bring attention to the main focus the Madonna.
